Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
