The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advert made with generative AI after receiving significant online backlash.

The short ad was developed with the help of generative AI clips and was initially released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the commercial. A number of labeled it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an valuable learning as we investigate the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," stated a statement from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed a series of things that often go badly over the Christmas break, using the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among large brands, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Since clips created using current AI video tools are prone to become unstable the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the production sector, with some observers noting it might affect opportunities for actors.

Defense from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive feedback" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise encountered criticism for using AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the continuing discussion within the advertising and production sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
