Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
