Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
