Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
