The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
