Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
